Currency - Pesos Uruguayos (UYU)

These are the two latest polymer notes issued by the Central Bank of Uruguay. Both notes are dated 2020 Series A issues. These are the third and fourth polymer notes issued by the central bank since 2017. In 2017, it issued a 50 pesos uruguayos polymer note commemorating the central bank's golden jubilee.

 

These two 2020 polymer notes are general circulating notes.

 

The designs are almost the same as those paper banknotes issued prior to converting to the new polymer series.

Front - Juan Zorilla De San Martin (b.1822-1931), a poet born in Montevideo.

Back - La Leyendo Patia (The Fatherland Legend), a poem by Juan Zorilla De San Martin in 1879, Allegoey of the Homeland legend.

Fifty Pesos Uruguayos

Front - Jose Pedro Varela (b.1845-1879), sociologist, journalist, politician.

Back - Monumenta A Jose Pedro Varela in Montevideo.

Twenty Pesos Uruguayos

...Uruguay - 50 Peso Uruguayos 50th Anniversary of Banco Central del Uruguay (BCU)

A commemorative note of 50 Peso Uruguayos issued to celebrate the 50th year of the creation of Banco Central del Uruguay (Central Bank of Uruguay). The bank was first established on 06.07.1967 and it is located in the capital city of Montevideo. This note is printed on polymer material and this is the first polymer ever issued by the bank. A total of 10 million notes have been issued for this celebration.

On the front the anniversary logo is printed on the right hand side and the year date of 2017 (1967-2017) is located next to it. On the back, it depicts a street scene with buildings and a bus in the form of a painting by both Walter Deliotti and Joaquîn Torres García. The design of the transparent window is in the shape of Uruguay.

This note was issued on 14.09.2018 by the president of the central bank Mario Bergara.

This is an interesting note of 10 Pesos Uruguayos released in (nd)1995 Series A issue. The interesting story about this note is that, according to a report, the decree law for issuing this note was incorrect. The note is printed with the decree law in Spanish as "Decreto-Ley No14.316". However this was either incorrect or the decree was not related to this issue. The note was then re-issued without the decree law and issued as a Series B note. The reason I bought this note was due to the design. National flag on notes is one of my many favourites. In addition to this, the design on the back depicts all arms of the 19 Departments (States) that made up the country, Uruguay. These Departments are: Artigas, Canelones, Cerro Largo, Colonia, Durazno, Flores, Florida, Lavalleja, Maldonado, Montevido (capital city), Paysandu, Rio Negro, Rivera, Rocha, Salto, San Jose, Soriano, Tacuarembo and Treinta y Tres.

Posted here is a full set of "A" series notes (9 pieces) printed with year dates between 1989 to 1992 from 1,000 to 500,000 New Pesos. This set was issued in a presentation folder which also included 3 unissued notes of 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Nuevos Pesos. These 3 notes are all printed with two large words in red "NO EMITIDO" on the front, which means unissued in Spanish. These are hyperinflation notes and it was later replaced in 1994 following the country's currency reform by removing 3 zeros from the currency value i.e. 1,000 Neuvos Pesos = 1 Peso Uruguayo. Almost all independence nations in South America had gone through an economy and currency crises at least once during the 80s and 90s due to hyperinflation and were forced to adopt a major currency reform to fix the economy. The 500,000 Neuvos Pesos was the largest currency ever issued in the history of Uruguay.
