...Cayman Islands - $25 and $50 2022 25th Anniversary of Cayman Islands Monetary Authority Issues

Two notes of $25 and $50, both overprinted with commemorative logos for the celebration of Cayman Islands Monetary Authority's 25th Anniversary. The CIMA was established on 01.01.1997 as the primary financial services regulator a.k.a. central bank. The bank is situated in the capital city George Town in the Grand Cayman island, the largest of the three main islands of Cayman Islands. These two notes are both dated 2022 but only released in 2023. The design on both notes are the same as the two notes of $25 and $50 previously 2010 series issued but with added commemorative logo on the front for this celebration. These two notes were initially scheduled to be released in 2022 but were delayed until mid-2023. The prefix series for these two notes is D/4. Cayman Islands have a rather small population of 74,000+/- and as such it is not expected many banknotes issued, even for those for general circulation.

Prior to 1972, the Jamaican dollar was circulating in the Cayman Islands and needless to say the Cayman Islands dollar was an offshoot of the Jamaican dollar. In 1972, the Cayman Islands introduced its own currency and like Jamaica, Australia and New Zealand, Cayman Islands adopted the 'Dollar' instead of 'Pound Sterling'. The exchange rate (Jamaica dollar to Cayman Islands dollar) at the time was $1 for ₤1. Jamaica converted its currency to decimal system on 08.09.1969. Today, one Cayman Islands dollar can buy $180+/- Jamaican dollars.

Twenty Five Dollars

Front - The portrait of Queen Elizabeth (b.1926-2022). This portrait was taken in 1999 by Mark Lawrence and has been used for the Cayman Islands banknotes series since 2010. The Queen was 73 years old when this portrait was taken. Since the accession to the British throne, 31 portraits of the Queen have been used on various banknotes issued around the Commonwealth issued during her 70 years reign, including those issued in Scotland. The design for this note is the same as the 2010 series but with the commemorative logo added in the center right, next to the Queen's head. Five scallop clam shells are printed in the note, with a larger one in the center left.

Back - A Hawk-bill turtle swimming in the sea, with some angle fish swimming above. This note (together with the $50) is printed by De La Rue. On the far right is an image of a scallop shell (on the front too) in grey and white colours and when the note is held up against the light, you can see a perfect registrar of the shell.

Fifty Dollars

Front - Queen Elizabeth the Second (b.1926-2022) on the center right, a 'flat' stingray on the center left. This is the second last series of banknotes printed with the portrait of the last Queen Elizabeth. The last series issued with her portrait was the commemorative note of $70 issued in memory of her first anniversary passing. Like the above $25 note, the three main islands of the Cayman Islands are printed in the center left, namely - Cayman Brac, Little Cayman and Grand Cayman. This note is printed with - 2022 Series Issued under The Monetary Authority Law.

Back - A stingray swimming in the ocean. A cone shaped shell on the top left corner, and an image of a stingray perfect registration/see-through security feature is located on the bottom right corner (bottom left on the front). A perfect registration of a stingray is printed on the far right as one of the few security features of this note.

Remembering Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second

This is a commemorative note of $70 released on 12.10.2023. This note was issued to celebrate the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth the Second 1926-2022, and also her Platinum Jubilee (70 years) to the British throne. Queen Elizabeth was born on 21.04.1926 and died on 08.09.2022. She was 96 years old.

Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne on 06.02.1952, following the death of her father, King George Vl. Queen Elizabeth was born in Mayfair London and died in Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

When Queen Elizabeth ascended to the British throne in 1952, she was the Head of State for 33 nations (including Rhodesia and Tanganyika) around the world, and by the time of her passing, this was reduced to 15 nations. From 1952 to 2022, the Queen had appointed 15 United Kingdom's Prime Ministers. The first British Prime Minister she appointed was Anthony Eden (b.1897-1977) in 1955 and the last was Liz Truss. The longest serving Prime Minister that had served under her reign was Margaret Thatcher (b.1925-2013) from 1979 to 1990 and the shortest was Liz Truss (only 43 days - from 06.09.2022 to 25.10.2022 resigned). The Queen died two days after Liz Truss was appointed as the British Prime Minister.

The face value for this banknote represents the 70 years of her reign as the Queen of the United Kingdom, and as the Head of States of the Commonwealth. This is a limited edition, with only 10,000 pieces printed and were restricted to 10 pieces per customer. Payment for the purchase can be in CI$70 or in USD$85.89. It is expected that this commemorative banknote will be kept as a souvenir by the beholders as none of the notes have been released to the public as circulation notes in the Cayman Islands.

Back - Two portraits of Queen Elizabeth. The one on the left was taken in 1960 by Anthony Buckley when the Queen was 34 years old. This portrait was used for banknotes issued from 1971 to 1974. The portrait next to it was taken in 1977 (aged 51) by Peter Grugeon. This portrait was used for her Silver Jubilee celebration in 1977. This portrait was also used for Cayman Islands banknotes issued from 1991 to 1998. To the right is an image of the Queen during her first one day official visit to Cayman Islands on 16.02.1983. During her lifetime as the Queen, she only visited the Cayman Islands twice. The other time was in February 1994.

...Cayman Islands - $1 Dated 2018 60th Anniverasry of the First Written Constitution and the Granting of Coat of Arms

This is a $1 commemorative note, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the First Constitution and the granting of the Coat of Arms by Queen Elizabeth ll. The Cayman Islands have been controlled by the British since 1670 and granted self-government on 04.07.1959. The proposal for the Cayman Islands Coat of Arms was first approved by the Legislative Assembly in 1957. The celebration for this special occasion was on 14.05.2018, however this note was only issued in 2020.

This new commemorative note has the same design as the $1 issued previously but with the round shape logo for the celebration added onto the center of the note. The signatures are also shifted to the right side of the note to allow room for the placement of the commemorative message.

In 2018, a $2 miniature sheet postage stamp was issued for this celebration with the Coat of Arms printed on the logo. However the logo for this note is showing a 5-point star instead of the Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms is printed next to the logo to the right next to the portrait of the Queen, just like those $1 notes issued earlier.

This note was launched on 27.01.2020 by the Premier of Cayman Islands, Alden McNee McLaughlin Jr (Premier since May 2013) during the Heroes Day celebrations and the note was then made available to the public on 31.01.2020.

I believe only one prefix is printed with Q/2. The prefix of Q/1 was used on the 2003 $1 note commemorating the 500th year of the Discovery of the Cayman Islands 1503-2003. However it is not sure if any replacement notes are printed. Cayman Islands has a rather small population of approximately 68,000+ and therefore there are plenty around for everyone including those overseas collectors.
