On the 15th of September 1821, Guatemala declared its independence from the Spanish Empire and the on 01.07.1823, it declared independence from the First Mexican Empire. The Spanish had ruled Guatemala for almost 300 years. This note is issued to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence from the Spanish rule.

The design of this commemorative note is similar to the design of the current 20 quetzales notes in circulation.

 

The 20 quetzales note is chosen because on the front it depicts the portrait of Jose Felipe Mariano Gálvez (b.1794-1862). He was one of the signers of the country's Declaration of Independence, and on the back showing the scene of the signing ceremony. During his lifetime, Gálvez was a lawyer and from 1831 to 1838, he was the Governor of Guatemala. A total of 25 million pieces issued for this commemorative series.

Unlike the current 20 quetzales note, the front of the note is in a vertical format. The years 1821 - 2021 is also added to the design. The Resplendent/Guatemala quetzals, the national bird of Guatemala is printed on the back resting on a tree branch, instead of flying on the front. The Guatemala currency is also named after this bird too.

 

This note was reportedly released on 27.05.2021.

Portrait of Jose Felipe Mariano Gálvez (b.1794-1862). The year of independence in 1821 and the year of celebration, 2021. Printed on the background is the Real Palacio Nueva Guatemala de la Asuncion (New Guatemala Royal Palace of Asuncion). The note is dated 27 DE MAYO DE 2020 (27.05.2020).

On the back is the scene of the signing ceremony of independence in 1821 (Firma del acta de la independencia de Centroamerica/Signature of the act of independence of Central America). On the right is the Quetzal bird resting on a tree branch. The Quetzala bird is also the national bird of Guatemala. On top of the bird, is printed with the commemorative text of - BICENTENARIO DE LA INDEPEDENCIA DE GUATEMALA (Bicentennial of Independence of Guatemala).
